About Me

Who am I?

I’m Dr Vanessa Parson, and I work at University of Sunderland, in the North East of England, UK. I did my BSc in Psychology at University of Wales, Bangor, and my PhD in Neuropsychology at Aston University, UK. I’ve been teaching undergraduate Psychology since 1999, and postgraduate Psychology since 2010. I also taught A’ Level Psychology between 2004 and 2010.

In 2012, off the back of helping develop a Study Skills course at Aston University, I published my book, Study and Communication Skills for Psychology Students with Oxford University Press. The second edition was published in 2018 (with a new chapter on Critical Thinking). I write blogs fairly regularly for our School blog, and have also recently written a blog for Oxford University Press: Higher Education.

I teach a wide variety of subjects within Psychology: Cyberpsychology, Cognitive Psychology (perception and attention being my favourite bits), and Anomalous Psychology are my core subjects at the moment, but I contribute to many others, including Research Methods and Statistics.

I’ve got a lot of experience teaching Study Skills and I’m absolutely convinced that if all students could just communicate what they know a little bit better, they’d achieve their potential.
