Welcome to ‘The Academic Skills Tutor’!

Welcome to the new blog site for Academic Skills at University. You’ll have plenty of resources available through your university, but, as a colleague of mine says ‘there’s no such thing as too many study skills’. This is one of the most important areas to get to grips with during your time at university and if you make sure you can clearly communicate your knowledge and understanding, then you’re on your way to some great marks.

I’m Vanessa, and I’ve been teaching Psychology at university-level since 1999, I even did a 6-year stint teaching A Level. During this time, I’ve taught a lot of study skills and marked a lot of work, and there are some common mistakes that most university students make, regardless of their educational background. Part of my goal with this site is to help students overcome these common errors, and improve their work.

I’ve published a book with Oxford University press (Study and Communication Skills for Psychology Students) and this blog will continue on from this work, to provide some helpful blogs, exercises and resources to ensure you have a basis to improve your academic skill set. The skills you develop during university will benefit you throughout life, so put the effort in now and reap the benefits.
